The aims of this study were to estimate the genetic parameters for 59 half-sib progenies of maté under runing for formation, and to evaluate the ecophysiological properties for four progenies (P15, P18, P41 e  47) and two controls (P61 and P62), components of one maté breeding experiment combining  rovenances and progenies, established in Erechim, RS. This research work was developed in order to evaluate progeny trials of Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden using the software SELEGEN-REML/BLUP. The best trees were identified in order to be used in seedling and clonal orchards. Fifty three half-sib progenies of three Australian provenances were tested in the municipalities of Mogi Guaçu, Boa Esperança do Sul and Caçapava, all located in the State of São Paulo. The perennial plant selection is based on individual genetic values predicted from phenotypic observations. The more adequate the control of environmental variability, the more accurate the prediction. Genetic evaluation and deviance analysis in an unbalanced provenance and progeny test of maté PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira

Likelihood ratio tests (LRT) were applied in an unbalanced provenance/progeny test of mate (Ilex paraguariensis A. St. Hil.). The trial was established in a randomized complete block design with seven provenances, 140 half sib families, ten blocks and six plants per linear plot. The spacing was 3 m x 2 m. The following conclusions were obtained from the deviance analysis (Anadev): all random effects and associated variance components and coefficients of determination (heritability and coefficients of determination of plots and provenances) were significant; there is enough genetic variability in both within and between provenance levels which can be adequately explored for breeding purposes.doi: 10.4336/2010.pfb.30.62.157

Genetic Gain for Wood Volume in Progeny Trial of Grevílea (Breeding Cycle 2) in Avaré, State of São Paulo PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira

Twenty and twenty three seed provenances of Grevillea robusta A. Cunn. were imported from Australia, in 1993 and 1994, respectively, by Embrapa Florestas. This genetic germoplasm was utilized for starting a breeding program in the states of Paraná, São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul. Twenty and twenty three seed provenances of Grevillea robusta Cunn were imported from Australia, in 1993 and 1994 respectively, by Embrapa Florestas. This genetic germoplasm was utilized for starting a breeding program in the State of Paraná, São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul. Total surface occupied by Grevillea experiments managed by Embrapa Florestas reachs 27,13 ha, being provenance tests, embracing 11,22 ha, installed in 1994, and progenies tests, comprising 15,91 ha, planted in 1994. The estimated Harmonic Mean for Genetic Values (MHVG), Relative Performance of Genetic Values (PRVG) and the Harmonic Mean of Relative Performance of Genetic Values (MHPRVG) were used as measures to provide and facilitate the interpretation of genotypic stability and adaptability of Eucalyptus grandis W. Yerba mate is largely used to produce drinks to human consume. In Spring the plants develop tender young leaves that could represent a new market niche in the yerba-mate industry; this period is called as ”pressafrinha” in this study. This study aimed to analyze the total and hydro soluble nutritional values of young leaves collected in the Spring season and its nutritional potential for human consumption. To represent the ”pressafrinha” young leaves, the collected vegetal material was limited to the third terminal bud. Imbuya is threatned of extinction, owns a valuable wood and for these characteristics, Embrapa Florestas, located at Colombo, State of Paraná, Brazil, decided to make efforts for its conservation ex-situ. A imbuia (Ocotea porosa) é uma espécie em extinção da Floresta Ombrófila Mista, cuja madeira possui altovalor econômico. O objetivo deste trabalho foi efetuar a seleção genética precoce individual por meio do programaSelegen REML/BLUP em germoplasma oriundo das populações de Colombo, PR, Canoinhas e Caçador, SC. Sample size for detecting significant differences among treatments PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira

Sample sizes required for the detection of significant differences among experimental treatments in scientific research are presented. An approach based on the magnitude of the coefficient of determination (R2) among treatments was used. The required sample sizes decrease with increase in R2. For detecting true differences with magnitudes of one standard deviation of the trait, the required sample size are 15 to 5 for R2 ranging from 5% to 70%.

Selection of Erva-mate Progenies for Leaf Weight Productivity, Temporal Stability and Adaptability PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira

This paper aimed to select progenies of “erva-mate” (Ilex paraguariensis St. HiI.) in Ivai - PR based on leaf weight productivity, stability and adaptability across three harvests. This can be achieved by the method MHPRVG (harmonic average of relative performance of genetic values) which is comparable with the methods by Annichiaricco and Lin & Binns. The genetic material was constituted by 25 half sib progenies evaluated in a complete block design with ten replicates and six plants per plot, in a 3 x 2 meters spacing. Variance components and heritability of seeds weight of peach palm (Bactris gasipaes Kunth.) PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira

This work aimed to analyze the performance of peach palm progenies seeds and to estimate genotypic values (additive and dominant effects) and heritability in the broad sense for seed weight collected in 40 trees. Heritability in the broad sense and not in the narrow sense was considered because a major amount of the variability for seed weight arises from the mother trees. The analysis of variance showed highly significant differences between progenies for seed weight. Heritability in the broad-sense was 0.95. The genetic values accumulated in the ten better trees ranged from 1.73 to 0.25, while genetic percentage gains ranged from 68% to 23%, showing a high amount of genetic variability for seed weight. Wood Production and genetic gain of grevílea (Grevillea robusta Cunn.) provenances at Ponta Grossa region, state of Paraná, Brazil PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira

A provenance/progenies trial of grevílea (Grevillea robusta Cunn.) was established in the Ponta Grossa region, state of Paraná, Brazil. The purpose was to identify genetically superior individuals in order to assure good material for future seed orchard. The genetic matherial was based on 60 half-sib progenies from eighteen Australian provenances and one control. Progenies were evaluated in randomized blocks with seven replications, five plants per plot and spacing of 3 m x 3 m (9 m2 per plant). Significant gains were estimated through selection of the 200 best trees (23,33%), for cilindric volume, at 10 years age, based on genetic values, aiming to establish a seedling seed orchard; or selecting the best twenty trees (33,33%), towards a clonal seed orchard.
